Agriculture is the single most significant thing humanity has done to the planet - we've reshaped entire ecosystems while developing the technology and tools to feed billions. It has created almost overwhelming abundance, but is responsible also for some of our greatest disasters. In order to really understand the food system, you need to understand agriculture and the people who practice it, at every scale.
Closest to home is gardening - producing food more or less by yourself for yourself - or a small group of others. My dad has been an enthusiastic gardener as long as I can remember, and I picked up a love of growing things and tasting them fresh picked and still warm from the sun. I love experimenting with new varieties and new techniques - we've had as many as 27 varieties of tomatoes in one 1/16 of an acre patch. Here are a few examples of produce from my various gardens.
